How to Study for the NEC Journeyman Exam
The exam is open book. That single fact should change everything about how you study — and it's the thing most people ignore.
It's a navigation test, not a memory test
Journeyman exams are timed, and the code book is on the desk. Nobody expects you to recite Table 310.16 from memory — they expect you to find the right article fast and read it precisely. The people who fail usually don't fail on knowledge; they fail on time, burned up flipping pages hunting for a rule they "sort of" remember. Every hour of studying should sharpen one of two skills: knowing where a rule lives, and reading exactly what it says instead of what you assume it says.
The nine areas the questions come from
Our practice bank maps the exam's territory into nine topic areas. If you can navigate confidently in all nine, there are very few places a question can hide:
- General theory & definitions — Articles 90, 100, 110: the Code's purpose and scope, defined terms, working-space rules.
- Branch circuits & feeders — Article 210/215 territory: receptacle placement, required circuits, continuous-load factors.
- Services — Article 230: service disconnects, locations, clearances.
- Overcurrent protection — Article 240: device sizing rules, standard ratings, small-conductor limits.
- Grounding & bonding — Article 250: electrodes, grounding electrode conductors, bonding jumpers. The most-tested and most-misunderstood article in the book.
- Wiring methods & materials — Chapter 3: securing and supporting rules, conductor ampacity adjustments, box and cabinet fill.
- Equipment for general use — Chapter 4: switches, receptacles, luminaires, appliances.
- Special occupancies — Chapter 5: hazardous (classified) locations, garages, health care.
- Special equipment & conditions — pools and spas (Article 680), signs, emergency systems.
A study method that matches the test
1. Tab your code book, but tab it honestly. Tabs you bought pre-printed mark where someone else thinks rules live. Add your own as you miss practice questions — a tab you placed after getting a question wrong is one you'll actually remember under time pressure.
2. Practice with the book open and a clock running. Answering untimed with the book closed trains the wrong skill twice. Give yourself two to three minutes a question and force yourself to physically find the article, even when you're sure you know the answer. Half the value of a practice question is the ten seconds of navigation it drills.
3. Read the exact words, especially the small ones. Exam writers build wrong answers out of near-miss numbers and skipped qualifiers — "listed" vs. unlisted, copper vs. aluminum, "not less than" vs. "not more than." When two choices look plausible, the difference is almost always one qualifying word in the code text.
4. Do the math cold. Load calculations, conductor sizing, box fill — a handful of calculation types repeat on every exam. Work them until the procedure is mechanical, because the exam room is a terrible place to derive a method from scratch.
5. Review misses harder than passes. A missed practice question that you stop and trace back to its article is worth ten you got right on instinct. That's why every question on this site shows you the reference — the explanation is the study material; the question is just the door in.
